Place: Lamotte Buleux, near Abbeville, France

Another Pierre Ben excavation in the Somme region of France, this time at Lamotte Buleux, near Abbeville. The crash occurred on 8th August 1944, and involved an A20G Havoc, Bureau Number 43-9390, of the 416 BG, 669 Sqn.

The crew consisted of:

1/Lt. Norman Shainberg
T/Sgt. Layford Curtis
Sgt. John Dugan

Lt. Norman V. Shainberg

Shainberg’s plane was hit by flak over the target area, fell out of formation with right engine feathered and smoking badly, and went off to the left towards Abbeville Drucat Airdrome. One or two crews reported seeing it crash. No chutes were seen to emerge. Lt. Shainberg and his two gunners, Sgt. J.D. Dugan and Sgt. L.B. Curtis were listed as missing, but did bail out and were taken prisoner on the 11th August. All three survived the war and returned to England on 30th January 1945.
